Rosemaling exhibit on display at Nordic Center

New art is on display at the Nordic Center in Duluth, featuring the works of Tara Austin.

Austin is an artist with an MFA in painting, and specializes in the folk art of Rosemaling. Her work is part of a revival of rosemaling in the Upper Midwest, which builds on traditions while infusing each peace with contemporary reworkings for future generations.

“It’s a good challenge. There’s a technique to the folk art, so there is a process you can follow… making it accessible, but it takes a lot of practice,” said Austin at the opening night of her show. This type of Norwegian art is traditionally based off of plants and flowers, and is usually done in oil paint. Austin’s company, Scandi Bijou, provides painted heirlooms for the modern lifestyle, including Dala horses and rosemaled décor.
