Jewelry artist and goldsmith Liz Bucheit will exhibit her collection of Norwegian-inspired filigree jewelry.  Inspired by the Scandinavian myth of the forest huldra, a beautiful woman with a cow tail who would charm humans into living life forever inside a magic mountain.

Nordic Reflections In Fiber: The 50Th Anniversary Of The Duluth Fiber Guild

Nordic Center Pop Up Exhibition Inspiraatioita: Finnish Art and Design in Minnesota as part of FinnFest

This exhibition will feature the work of 8 Minnesota artists who draw inspiration from traditional and contemporary Finnish art and design. These artists will share works that explore diverse themes through textiles, drawing, painting, ceramics, photography, and mixed media.

Jeffrey Kalstrom, Duluth artist and educator, creates optically dazzling and thought provoking mixed media wall panels and kinetic sculptures that playfully combine mythic imagery.

Leading With Our Hearts

March 17 - April 29

This exhibition will feature traditional and contemporary floral and geometric designs from Ojibwe, Nordic and Sami textile traditions. Ojibwe floral beadwork and regalia from Fond Du La Reservation members and Swedish-Norwegian inspired paintings of folk dress motifs, embroideries and tapestries will be presented in an installation to promote the healing power of nature and to celebrate cultural traditions of the North.

January 28 - February 24

Inspired by Nordic textile patterns, Lines and Lineage: Works by Amy Sands at the Nordic Center presents new reimagined artworks utilizing textile patterns from the collections of the American Swedish Institute in Minneapolis and the Osterøy Museum in Loneväg, Norway.

Several of the works are inspired by an old sample book of Swedish bobbin lace from the ASI collection entitled “Knyppel Profver” or “Lace Tests”. This book belonged to Carolyn Hjelmerus, who immigrated to Minnesota in 1889.

Pepperkakebyen

November 18 - December 18, 2022

The Nordic Center of Duluth and Son’s of Norway Nortun Lodge are hosting the 11th Annual Pepperkakebyen Gingerbread City of Duluth. Pepperkakebyen opens in-person and online on Friday, November 18th at 6 pm, with the Duluth City of the North Parade.

Join us in person on Saturdays to partake in Nordic crafts with UMD students.

Stories in Tapestries: The Landscape and Community of Valley Grove Church by Robbie LaFleur

September 30 - October 29, 2022

Robbie LaFleur is an award-winning textile artist working in the Norwegian Billedvev, or woven pictures style. In this exhibit, Robbie uses brilliant colors and keen observation to capture a rural church, its people, environment and central role in the Scandinavian-American immigrant life. During the month of the exhibition, the Nordic Center will host many events including a gallery talk and weaving demonstration.

Fika: Original Watercolors by Jan Padover

July 22 - September 18, 2022

Fika (fee-ka) is the act of gathering socially for a cup of coffee, or tea In Sweden, this twice-daily ritual also involves baked goods, or fikabrod.

Previously featured on the outside historic fence of American Swedish Institute, Jan Padover’s original watercolor paintings feature 15 popular Swedish baked goods often enjoyed during fika. These paintings are part of a larger fikainspired watercolor series. The Nordic Center received these fika posters on-loan from ASI to use as a window display during Summer 2022. 

Making the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial

June 17 - July 9, 2022

Making the Clayton Jackson McGhie Memorial is an exhibit featuring photographs, plans, artifacts and documents pertaining to the creation of the Clayton, Jackson, McGhie Memorial as designed and created by artist Carla Stetson, with text by Anthony Peyton Porter and commissioned by the City of Duluth.

The exhibit opens June 17 to coincide with Juneteenth, and runs until July 10.
